FURER & SERRATI: Perpendicular to the Galaxy

SAKS presents the sculptures and drawings of the young swiss duo Furer & Serrati : Perpendicular to the Galaxy.

"Of Man and Woman draw a unique circle where from the square with equal sides emerges. Build it into a triangle, as it will then transform itself into a perfect sphere. Thus the philosopher's stone is born. Would your mind be slow to get hold of this great mystery, understand the geometer's work and you will know." (Michael Maier (1568-1622) "Atlanta Fugiens XXI"). In addition to the writings left by the alchemists, the monumental work by Furer & Serrati "The Melancholy" was inspired by the sculptural shape represented in Albrecht Dürer's famous engraving, "Melancholia I", where a feminin figure sat in a swamped pose illustrates  the black bile, considered  by antique medicine as being the cause of the melancholic state. In the interpretation given by the young artists, sculpture and gallery floor are unified with the same black and granulous material, the soft coating of the tartan. Hardly released from the ground, the stone enters levitation announcing the rise of the mind.

Echoing the sculpture, an ensemble of drawings titled "My Own Private Stage Diving" references the inner jump, a quantum leap, abrupt and unpredictable, transcending fears and seclusion.

Furer & Serrati's work is a focused reflection on one's inner world, regardless of external social or political realities. Their search investigates art history, as well as science and the World of Ideas, ally rational and irrational and open the viewer to new perspectives upon his own existence and his relationship to the Universe.
